Senior Assisted Living
(Fox River Apartments - Olney, Illinois)

Starting July 1st 2006 Christian Social Services of Illinois became the service provider for the Fox River Apartments in Olney, Illinois. The Fox River Apartments are located on five acres of property just north of Olney Central College. This 30-unit apartment community provides meals, housekeeping, social services and other daily assistance to the frail elderly 60 years of age and older. Low to moderate income people within this community receive this assistance through a contract with the Illinois Department on Aging. The management and staff of the Fox River community have done an outstanding job in maintaining the quality of service to the residents and the quality of the facilities as a whole.

This is a natural fit for the CSS mission, i.e., "As a visible expression of God's loving community and consistent with the example of Jesus Christ, Christian Social Services of Illinois provides direct services to persons of all backgrounds with social and emotional needs across the continuum of life." It is the first opportunity in recent years for Christian Social Services to be involved with a new ministry, that of, elder care responsibility. The Fox River Apartment Community was established by not-for-profit corporation called the Southeastern Illinois Residential Organization (SIRO). There are seven board members, two of whom are from the Belleville Diocese plus five at-large members. In addition, the managing director of the apartment community, serves as an ex-officio member of the board as well.

As the "Baby Boomer" population continues to age, the elder care role is expected to become an even greater responsibility in the years to come, especially here in Southern Illinois where we have 16 of the poorest counties in the state. Many in our population will likely not have the means to sustain their livelihood in their senior years and will require affordable/subsidized care facilities. It will be the Christian Social Services' opportunity to step up and increase its presence in varying communities in Southern Illinois to provide this care.
